Abstract:

This research had 3 objectives. The first objective was to explore the procedures of the use English songs as audio learning media on students’ listening comprehension at the senior high school level. The second one was the reasons for using English songs as audio learning media on students listening comprehension at the senior high school level. Finally, the third one was to explore challenges in using English songs on listening comprehension.
This research was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Boyan Tanjung using a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed using an interactive model from Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014) by of qualitative data analysis, which included data condensation, display, and conclusion drawing/verification. To ensure the credibility of the data, triangulation of was applied.
The findings revealed that English songs were implemented as audio learning media through structured listening activities, including preparation before listening, focused listening to songs, and follow-up discussions. The use of English songs provided authentic listening input and supported students’ engagement during listening activities. The reasons for using English songs were to increased student motivation, created a more relaxed learning atmosphere, and invited greater student participation in listening tasks. However, several challenges were encountered, such as fast song tempo, unfamiliar accents, limited vocabulary, difficulty in selecting appropriate songs, technical problems, and time constraints. The research concluded that English songs could function as meaningful audio learning media in listening instruction when implemented carefully and supported by appropriate teaching strategies. The findings of this research were expected to contribute to English language teaching, particularly in listening instruction, and to serve as a reference for future research related to the use of songs as audio learning media.
