Abstract:
Marthasheila, 12117017. The Implemetation of Total Physical Response
Method For Vocabulary Teaching: A Case Study at Smp Negeri 17 Kota
Pontianak Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Institute for Islamic
Studies of Pontianak (IAIN Pontianak). 2025.This research aimed to explore the
implementation of the Total Physical Response (TPR) method in teaching
English vocabulary to seventh grade students at SMP Negeri 17 Kota Pontianak
and this research focused on the use of TPR in warming up activities, role
reversal activities, and its integration into reading and writing activities.
A descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design was
employed. The research subjects consisted of two English teachers and seventh
grade students of SMP Negeri 17 Kota Pontianak. The data were collected
through classroom observations, semi structured interviews, and
documentation. The collected data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s
interactive data analysis framework, including data reduction, data display, and
data verification
The findings showed that TPR helped students understand and retain
vocabulary more effectively through physical movement and verbal commands.
The method increased students’ participation, confidence, and motivation in
learning English vocabulary. However, TPR was less effective for teaching
abstract vocabulary and supporting extended language production. Therefore,
TPR is effective as a supportive strategy for vocabulary teaching but should be
combined with other instructional methods to achieve balanced language
learning.
