This research investigated the effect of the Scavenger Hunt game in improving students' English Vocabulary Mastery at SD Negeri 20 SKPI SP 5 Nobal. The questions were as follows. First, what is the students' vocabulary mastery before the treatment using the Scavenger Hunt game?. Second, what is the students' vocabulary mastery after the treatment using the Scavenger Hunt game?. Third, how significant is the mastery after using the Scavenger Hunt game as a learning method?.
It was a pre-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test design. The research concerned on three topics: farm animals, action verbs, and transportations. The research participants were 24 students in grade V A. The data were collected through multiple-choice tests before and after using the Scavenger Hunt game, as well as interviews to find out students' perceptions of this method. The data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test.
This research found as follows. First, the students' scores before using Scavenger Hunt game were 57.5 (Farm Animals), 36.62 (Action verbs), and 51.70 (Transportations). Second, the students' scores after using the Scavenger Hunt game were 71.92 (Farm Animals), 74.37 (Action Verbs), 76.38 (Transportations). Third, the significant game effect indicated using the Scavenger Hunt game was 0.000 for all three topics. Since the significance value is smaller than the set significance level (0.000 < 0.05), the null hypothesis (H₀) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Hₐ) is accepted. The interviews with students also showed positive responses, where students found the learning more enjoyable and motivational. Thus, it can be concluded that using the Scavenger Hunt game significantly affects students' vocabulary mastery of English.
