This research investigated the effectiveness of the Tongue Twister Technique in improving students’ English pronunciation ability at MTs Nahdlatul Athfal. The research questions were as follows. First, what is the students’ pronunciation ability before being treated using the Tongue Twister Technique? Second, what is the students’ pronunciation ability after being treated using the Tongue Twister Technique? Third, how significant is the effect of using the Tongue Twister Technique on students’ pronunciation?
It was a pre-experimental study with a pre-test and post-test design. This research focused on the pronunciation of several English consonant sounds, such as /θ/, /ð/, /ʃ/, /ʒ/, /v/, and /z/. The research participants were 27 students from class VIII at MTs Nahdlatul Athfal. The data were collected through pronunciation tests before and after applying the Tongue Twister Technique, as well as interviews to find out students' perceptions of the method. The data were analyzed using a paired samples t-test.
This study found the following results. First, the students' score before applying the Tongue Twister Technique was 13.9 (Pre-test). Second, students' scores after applying the Tongue Twister Technique increased to 17.01 (Post-test). Third, the results of the paired sample t-test showed that the difference was statistically significant (p > 0.05), the increase in the average score indicated that Tongue Twister Technique had a positive effect on students' pronunciation ability. In addition, the interview results showed that students felt more motivated and confident when learning pronunciation by using this technique. |
